Ingredient Spotlight – SNAP 8

“Aging” can refer to a multitude of physical, emotional and mental processes that occur as we get older, but most of us think about it in terms of the physical effects, especially on our faces. Wrinkles, unfortunately, are the most common, least attractive and hardest to disguise aspect of the physical forms of aging, which is why anti-aging skin care is a billion-dollar industry! SNAP-8 or Acetyl Octapeptide-3, more commonly referred to simply as “Snap 8,” is the topic of interest. At the most basic level, it is an anti-wrinkle octapeptide. From the perspective of its chemical composition, it is an elongation of the famous hexapeptide Argireline® (commonly known as “Argireline”). Snap 8 reduces the severity of wrinkles on your face caused by the contraction of muscles due to facial expressions, especially in the forehead and around the eyes. It is a safer, more economical and milder alternative to Botulinum Toxin (also known as “Botox”), targeting the same wrinkle-formation but with a topical substance instead of an injection.

If any of this is confusing, think of it this way: Any time you make a facial expression, there is a signal sent from your brain that tells the muscle that’s involved to contract. It’s these movements that can leave deep lines in your face, wrinkles or even bags under the eye. If those muscles aren’t told to move, the signs of use can’t appear. It’s similar to a car that is kept in the garage; if it’s never taken out on the road, there’s much less chance for wear and tear. Similarly, Snap-8 works to keep your muscles from moving, therefore softening the appearance of wrinkles you already have and preventing new ones from appearing!
